New Year's Resolution

Happy New Year!!  The new year is upon us and often times the New Year brings the idea of resolutions.  A New Year's resolution is a promise for self improvement or commitment to improving our surroundings.  Many people make the promise to exercise more, drink more water, open doors for others, or be nice to our siblings.  I am a big fan of resolutions because of the positive nature surrounding them.  Resolutions are almost always a promise to enhance the lives of others, typically building stronger relationships with them.  As a teacher, I am a firm believer in relationships improving success.  Whether it is success in the classroom, gym, or performing arts the relationships students have with those in a position of leadership has an enormous impact.

As for my resolution this year...  I am committed to getting more sleep.  Elementary age students need 10 or more hours of sleep each night.  Adults need 8 or more hours of sleep each night and I am sad to admit that I rarely get enough sleep.  How does sleep improve health or help others?  I think my wife and children will verify that I am happier and easier to be around when I am well rested:).  Other health benefits include:

1.  Improved memory:  When learning a new skill sleep is as important as practice.
2.  Quality of life:  Who doesn't want to be happier?
3.  Spurs creativity
4.  Less fatigue and more stamina
5.  Improved academic performance
6.  Longer attention span
7.  Maintain a healthy weight
8.  Decrease stress levels

Needless to say adequate sleep can enhance my life and the others around me.  What is your New Year's Resolution?
