Lifetime recreation

What constitutes an activity as lifetime recreation?  Well, any activity a person can participate in as a child or as an adult would fall into that category.  Typically, these activities are low impact, but full of enjoyment.  More often than not team sports do not fall in the category of lifetime recreation.  Golf, bowling, dance, frisbee golf, and physical fitness are  individual activities included in our curriculum that certainly fit the bill.  However, some team sports can be considered lifetime recreation; particularly--volleyball.  Volleyball incorporates some gross-motor skills (i.e. passing, setting, and serving), but also an element of teamwork and cooperation.  We are starting our volleyball unit in P.E and will focus our attention on individual skills as well as cooperative games.

Volleyball has rich tradition here in Maple Lake and this year is no exception.  The Maple Lake Irish Volleyball team has advanced to the state tournament for the fourth straight year!!!  Irish volleyball will play at the Xcel Energy Center in the AA bracket beginning Thursday night at 5 p.m. against Concordia Academy-Roseville.

To make things more enjoyable for the Irish fans, the Maple Lake Irish Football team has also advanced to the State Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years!!!  Friday, November 7th the Irish football team will play at the Rochester Community and Technical College at 7 p.m. against Caledonia.

Needless to say, team sports are not always lifetime activities for participation, but they will certainly lead to lifetime of memories for students, families, fans, and the community.  Good Luck Irish!!!
