Lifetime recreation

What constitutes an activity as lifetime recreation?  Well, any activity a person can participate in as a child or as an adult would fall into that category.  Typically, these activities are low impact, but full of enjoyment.  More often than not team sports do not fall in the category of lifetime recreation.  Golf, bowling, dance, frisbee golf, and physical fitness are  individual activities included in our curriculum that certainly fit the bill.  However, some team sports can be considered lifetime recreation; particularly--volleyball.  Volleyball incorporates some gross-motor skills (i.e. passing, setting, and serving), but also an element of teamwork and cooperation.  We are starting our volleyball unit in P.E and will focus our attention on individual skills as well as cooperative games.

Volleyball has rich tradition here in Maple Lake and this year is no exception.  The Maple Lake Irish Volleyball team has advanced to the state tournament for the fourth straight year!!!  Irish volleyball will play at the Xcel Energy Center in the AA bracket beginning Thursday night at 5 p.m. against Concordia Academy-Roseville.

Check out the AA Volleyball bracket:

To make things more enjoyable for the Irish fans, the Maple Lake Irish Football team has also advanced to the State Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years!!!  Friday, November 7th the Irish football team will play at the Rochester Community and Technical College at 7 p.m. against Caledonia.

Needless to say, team sports are not always lifetime activities for participation, but they will certainly lead to lifetime of memories for students, families, fans, and the community.  Good Luck Irish!!!

The importance of exercise and fitness...

Physical Education class is sometimes the only physical activity students get throughout the day.  Did you know that children today spend a total of 7.5 hours in front of a screen?  OR that only 1 in 3 children are active every day?  Physical activity is so important and healthy lifestyles are created at an early age.

Check out my webpage for some interesting links about making healthy choices.

Also take time read about physical activity guidelines from the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.

Fall is upon us!!

Both the calendar and the weather are telling us its finally fall...  Just as a reminder please bring warm clothes because we do intend to go outside for P.E whenever possible.  Also remember it is nice to have a spare pair of socks, just in case they get wet outside.

Intermediate P.E (4th-6th grade):
We are currently in the heart of our football unit.  Passing, catching, centering, and even developing the idea of offense and defense.  In the coming days, we will move into small group football games to expand on all the football skills and concepts.

Primary P.E (K-3rd grade)
Throwing and catching have taken up much of our time over the last week as we continue to develop hand-eye coordination.  Some groups have been using bean bags while others have used soft dodgeballs and even footballs.

Congrats to all students as we completed our mile/half mile run last week.  Great job!!!  All students will be completing the remaining physical fitness tests over the next couple weeks.

Stay active:)

Off and Running!

Week two, is coming to and end...  It is amazing how each day seems to fly by!!  We are off to a great start in both Morning Movers and P.E.

Morning Movers is a program that started 4 years ago to incorporate more physical activity into the school day.  Morning Movers take place from 7:45 to 8:00 a.m each day for students in Kindergarten through Sixth grade.  Students who arrive at school before 8:00 a.m. are to drop off their school bag and head out to the playground to walk or jog a predetermined path.  This program moves inside if it is raining and each grade level is designated to walk or jog in the gym depending on the day.  Please remember we will even head outside in the snow, so bring your boots this winter.

In P.E we have begun our soccer unit.  Unfortunately, the weather has not cooperated very well and we have been inside part time.  Passing/kicking, dribbling, goaltending, and teamwork are currently being discussed in most classes with our youngest groups focusing first on the gross motor movement of kicking.  We are looking forward to getting outside for the remainder of our soccer unit and the start of our physical fitness testing.  Have a great week and feel free to be in touch!

Here I am, preparing for school and embarking on a new journey.... blogging.  It is not a new sport, activity, board game or manipulative.  Instead, it is a new fangled way of keeping in touch with students, parents, teachers, and people in general.  I look forward to posting regularly about physical education in Maple Lake, but be patient as there will be a few hiccups along the way.  Happy reading!!
